A family from Queens, New York is devastated after their 19-year-old French poodle, Leona, was euthanized at Animal Care Centers of New York within three hours of having mistakenly escaped from the family’s yard.

According to AbcNews, the dog’s owner, Erika Leon had grown up with her bonded pal, and on Sunday, the dog walked away from the family home; within three hours the dog had been taken to the shelter in Brooklyn. And although the shelter had posted a lost and found notice, the dog was euthanized within hours.

Animal Care Center stated the dog had no identification, no license and had not been microchipped. They also stated, when picked up as a stray in the middle of the road, the dog had been spinning in circles and was unsteady on her legs. After a veterinarian examination, the shelter stated the following:

[The dog is in a] very debilitated state and suffering from progressive neurological symptoms. She was minimally aware of her surroundings, non-reactive to stimuli, weak and unable to stand for more than a few minutes before falling. She was emaciated with a body condition of 2/9 indicating possible chronic illness.

ACC

Erika, however contends what ACC wrote is wrong and said her dog had not been emaciated, ate every day and that the dog’s paperwork from the shelter stated “no cruelty or trauma was detected.” It had always been Erika’s wish that when it was time for her dog to be put to sleep, she would be there, and that was to be her decision – not the one for the staff at ACC.

That was something we wanted to do in the final moments, we would all be able to say goodbye.

In New York, veterinarians can euthanize a dog before the end of a stray holding period of three days if the animal is suffering. In addition, the veterinarians also stated given the dog’s current condition, she also suffered from heart disease, she was blind, deaf and had severe dental issues, and the doctors believed the dog was suffering.

The family is planning a protest this Saturday, demanding justice for her dog.

  1. Dirty RATS! These shelters are to quick to kill the elderly and young! I’m sick of reading how it was a accident or we thought it best to kill this pet. Of course she was confused she was blind and deaf and lost! I would be freaking out if they killed my 18 year old dog who is blind, dead and thin as a rail! RIP Leona you didn’t deserve what they did to you. :*-(
