Coco, a two-year-old Labrador retriever, recently arrived at the Woodside Animal Rescue Trust in Plympton, Devon, with another dog following the death of their owner. Coco and his dog pal had become addicted to alcohol after their owner had been giving the dogs frequent alcoholic drinks.

Fortunately, Coco is “on his way to a full recovery” after a month and having received intensive care during the time; thanks to the help of the humane organization.

The dog’s tragic story had been brought to the public’s attention after he and another dog had been surrendered to the rescue after the death of their owner. Soon after they arrived, the dogs began to suffer from convulsions, and sadly Coco’s friend passed away. It soon became clear the dogs had been displaying symptoms of alcohol withdrawal. The veterinarian for the rescue was unable to save the life of Coco’s pal, however with round-the-clock care and four weeks of sedation to counteract the withdrawal symptoms, the protocol was able to save the dog’s life.

Coco has since been weaned from all medication and is now starting to behave like a normal dog. Although he is not ready to be made available for adoption since he still remains psychologically and mentally anxious at times.

Having the Dunroamin Unit has meant he has been able to be cared for in a more homey environment and away from the main kennels. This has most certainly made a difference to his recovery and overall wellbeing. No-one knows the specifics on how these dogs got into the situation with alcohol, but we do know that without our care Coco would likely have not survived this heart breaking ordeal.
