In Manhattan, a pink pigeon was found in New York City. Experts at the Wild Bird Org., speculate the bird had been dyed for a gender reveal.

Pigeons come in many different colors and plumages, but pink isn’t one of them. This is a domestic king pigeon who was deliberately dyed this color and released. This poor bird has it bad enough as a domestic bird unable to find food in the wild, fly well or escape predators, but being a bright, unusual color makes him even more of a target. He’s also barely more than a fledgling but shows signs of longterm malnutrition. Luckily a kind person rescued him in Madison Square Park, and he’s now safely in care.

The pigeon is barely more than a fledging and should be white.

The pigeon was found in Madison Square Park and thanks to a Good Samaritan, was brought to the organization where he has been undergoing repeated baths. Even if the baths don’t return his color back to white, he will eventually molt the pink feathers.

Please be reminded not to release domestic bird to the wild; we’ve seen them freed for weddings, funeral, various celebrations and art projects. They don’t know how to look for food or survive in the wild. If you see an all-white pigeon in the wild or any tame bird, please carefully capture it and bring it to the nearest sanctuary.

  1. OMG: I am not a bird fan, but I am totally against this practice of releasing birds for weddings and other events. I have seen hawks and other large birds of prey (like eagles) catch and devour these tame birds (I won’t describe it, but it’s horrible to see. As well as dealing with the carcass and piles of bloody feathers remaining)……. I am glad that this young pink bird is in good hands. I feel sad for the other pink birds released at the same time who don’t stand a “fair chance” to survive in the wild…….

There are other ways to announce a gender (for example: pink or blue mnm’s in a gift bag, pink or blue wrapped candy bars)…….

I would never toss rice at a wedding or funeral. Maybe bird seed. I think flower petals for a wedding or funeral are lovely……
