On Monday, Stray Rescue of St. Louis shared a Facebook post and photos of an x-ray that showed a fishing hook lodged inside of a five-month-old puppy’s abdomen. No one knows why or how she ingested it, however the rescue organization had been told that the puppy was set to be euthanized.
“Hold up!,” rescuers shouted and asked that the puppy named Tofu be brought to the rescue organization. When she arrived, she headed for emergency surgery. No one was sure of the outcome or of the puppy’s future.
And now – just one day later, Tofu did not need surgery. Instead, experienced surgeons were able to use an endoscope to enter through her mouth and down her throat. The endoscope is a tool made of thin tubes with a powerful light and tiny camera at the end. Veterinarians then discovered the hook had lodged into her esophagus. They were able to successfully extract the foreign body.
There was no perforation, but we will continue to monitor her to make sure a stricture [abnormal narrowing] does not form of scar tissue, but that is unlikely.

Less than one day later, Tofu is gaining back her energy and can’t wait to snuggle.
