An abandoned dog at Orange County Animal Services in Orlando, Florida, who suffered from a number of small cysts on the bottom of her eyelids, struggled to gain any positive attention from potential adopters. Instead, some of the rather heartless people called Duchess “ugly.”

Duchess arrived at the shelter in December 2022 after she was surrendered due to a landlord dispute. The tiny growths had been affecting her eyes, and she would need surgery to correct the problem.

Before the dog’s surgery had been scheduled, some really nasty remarks about the sweet pup’s looks from people who stated they “couldn’t get past” her eye issues began to circulate on social media.

Comments included:

She looks so ugly.

What is that?

What’s wrong with her?

Is she blind?

How much is this gonna cost me?

She’ll never get adopted.

A few weeks later, Duchess underwent surgery, and it was all so successful. The growths had been dermoids, which are rare skin cysts that have formed before birth. And when Duchess’ new photos came out on social media, the sweet girl became a star.

She was transferred to Rescue Dogs Dream, Inc. and placed in a foster home to recover from surgery, and then she was adopted! Her new loving family has renamed her Lena, and this beautiful dog now has a family of her own who love her unconditionally.

Her new family says Lena is doing great and “is the sweetest dog they have ever met.”

“She now has a new Mom and Dad to spoil her rotten (Dad works from home) and she has a new brother to play with, in her privacy fenced yard. She gets to go on hikes and adventures and she is a cherished part of the family.”
