On Thursday, the San Diego Zoo Safari Park broke sad news to the public about the death of a newborn calf. The zoo said that the unnamed calf, born to mom Zindzhi on January 17, had to be euthanized, writing:

It is with heavy hearts that we report the passing of a 2-day-old male Masai giraffe calf born at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park this week.

Explaining:

Following the birth, wildlife care specialists noticed that the calf’s condition began to deteriorate, including difficulty standing and not nursing.

Though the calf was taken to Safari Park’s Harter Veterinary Medical Center for round-the-clock care by wildlife professionals, his condition continued to deteriorate and the “compassionate decision” was made to end his suffering.

The zoo is taking care to ensure that the other giraffes are handling the calf’s loss:

Zindzhi and the other members of the giraffe herd are being monitored closely for any unusual behavior after the calf’s passing. Please take a moment to offer your condolences to all who are feeling this difficult loss.
