A five-year-old Staffordshire terrier named Skyy, accidentally put her owner in the hospital after her excitement and “zoomies” resulted in headbutting her human mom in the chin. Erin Stevenson, from Chicago, had been playing with Skyy in the backyard when the dog ran towards her crashing into the woman’s lower jaw.

She was running around doing zoomies back and forth in the yard. She came towards me and I didn’t think anything of it so I leant forward and she jumped and headbutted me straight under the jaw. It hurt but I didn’t think much of it. I just thought it was from the impact. Two days later my throat started to hurt. I though it was strep throat. I was planning on going to see a doctor but I woke up at around 3am and I couldn’t swallow.

According to the Mirror, Erin, 41, stated her neck hurt the next day, but she thought she had a sore throat and had planned to see a doctor the following day if she didn’t feel better. On the third day after the accident, however Erin’s neck was so swollen she could barely breathe and went to the hospital. She was given antibiotics and sent home.

In follow up care, Erin’s CT scan revealed two molars had been cracked, and an infection had developed causing extreme pain and swelling. Doctors worried her airway would close. The next step was to put Erin on life support with a breathing tube for a week as the infection drained from her neck.

After months of recuperating, Erin still has trouble completely opening her mouth, but holds no grudge against Skyy. Neighbors helped out watching Skyy, who everyone agrees is a handful, but obviously has no idea the trouble she caused.

Get well soon Erin.
