At the Berkeley Animal Center in Moncks Corner, South Carolina, there continues to be a critical need for foster home parents and/or adoptions. Just a week ago, volunteer and pet photographer Jeanne Taylor posted a photo highlighting the plight of a terrified young mother dog and her two puppies. The heartbreaking photo had been taken by a friend who couldn’t walk away from a family in such dire need of help.

When I post that the shelter is in dire need of fosters, I’m not exaggerating. While I was away, my friend Molly sent me this image of her recent bring-home, a mother dog and two puppies, terrified and shut-down in the shelter. And the shelter is NO PLACE for young puppies, so Molly did as she often does and stepped by to foster.

The photo of Ziva and her puppies touched so many hearts, and followers of the animal shelter wanted to know more. Ziva had been brought to the shelter with her puppies at the beginning of April, and when she arrived she had been completely shut down. Whenever anyone would try and help her, Ziva would immediately retreat into the corner and try to disappear.

And then a devoted foster parent volunteered to help Ziva, and now with lots of love and patience Ziva is slowly learning that humans can be kind.

Ziva and her puppies, Dexter and Queenie are doing great! Her puppies are growing fast and becoming full of personality and playfulness. They love to be held and are showing interest in eating puppy food.

Ziva is a wonderful momma dog and watches over her babies very carefully, tending to their every need. She is also doing fantastic and is very accepting of affection. She is still shy and quiet, but loves the quiet company of soft pets while she rests.

Ziva and her puppies will be heading to The Healthy Hearts and Paws Project in Ohio where the mom will be receiving life-saving treatment for heartworms and when ready, all will be looking for their own perfect families.
