On May 12, a California sheriff’s office announced the unexpected death of a K9 named Bluz, who died following a training exercise. Bluz was a member of the Kings County Sheriff’s Office and he had worked with Senior Deputy Matt Washburn since July 25, 2016.

The sheriff’s office recounted what had transpired before Bluz passed away, writing:

Bluz and his handler, Senior Deputy Matt Washburn, had completed a training exercise and returned Bluz to their air conditioned K-9 unit to rest and rehydrate with water. When Washburn retrieved Bluz for a later exercise he discovered Bluz deceased. The K-9 unit was still cool inside and water was available to Bluz so heat and dehydration was not the cause of his unfortunate passing.

As reported by the Hanford Sentinel, Bluz was a beloved member of Deputy Washburn’s family. Washburn said that Bluz was a “happy dog” who enjoyed playing and relaxing. He told the news agency:

“Bluz was my best friend, and the best partner anyone could ask for. I swear he could read my mind. I will miss him dearly,”
