Last year, a California animal shelter took in a Belgian Malinois puppy who was surrendered by a family. The high-energy puppy was more than his owners had bargained for and they admitted that they were not up for the training required to make the puppy a good companion.

The shelter, East Bay SPCA, knew that a high-drive puppy would do poorly in a shelter setting, so they reached out to the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation (SDF) in southern California. The animal welfare agency sent the search dog foundation some videos showing the puppy’s drive, and that did the trick…they agreed that he might be a good fit with their organization.

The next day, a representative with the foundation flew up to get the pup and named him Dodger.

Dodger has been thriving with the search dog foundation and he is on track to graduate and become an official search and rescue dog.

Dodger’s future is bright and he will certainly accomplish great things, thanks to the shelter staff who realized his potential and took the time to ensure that he was where he needed to be. They said, “we couldn’t be more proud!”
