A ram in South Sudan will be spending the next three years at a military camp jail as punishment for killing a 45-year-old woman. According to multiple reports, Major Elijah Mabor stated the ram had killed Adhieu Chaping by repeatedly head butting her in the ribs.
According to the Mirror, the ram was arrested after police stated the owner of the animal was innocent, however the ram “perpetuated the crime so it deserves to be arrested then later on the case shall be forwarded to customary court where the case can be handled amicably.”
Although the owner of the animal, Duony Manyang Dhai will not be jailed, he has been ordered to compensate the deceased woman’s family by turning over five cows. In South Sudan, cows are the preferred form of currency and have been used to buy homes and for other large purposes. Banks in the country are not reliable.
The sheep will be spending the next three years in a military camp in Aduel County headquarters in Sudan’s Lakes State. After the ram completes his sentence, he will also become the property of the victim’s family.
