Sammy is just over a year old, and this “handsome guy with the big head” had been involved in an incident and has been labeled “rescue only.” On February 14, Valentine’s Day, Sammy arrived at Carson Animal Care Center shivering in fright. He was given time to rest in his kennel and decompress.

When the handler approached, Sammy had been trembling and shaking at the rear of his kennel. His tail was tucked, but he had a closed mouth when the person opened the kennel door. A leash was attached to his collar, and Sammy just froze – still trembling. Moments later, he did get up and walked outside on his own.

He was a bit tense and made it to the yard where he greeted the other dogs with a stiff body, high tail, ears pinned back and growled through the fence. A muzzle was placed on Sammy, and he was then led into the play yard where he walked away from all the dogs and wanted to be left alone. During that time, he lunged at one of the dogs that had tried to jump on him. The handler corrected him, and Sammy gave the handlers “whale eyes” as they walked past him, but when they kneeled near him, Sammy would slowly approach and enjoyed being petted. For the rest of his time in the play yard, Sammy sat in the corner. As a result of his behavior and his fear, Sammy has to be “rescue only” and is required to go to a home with no other dogs.

Shelter Assessment:

Sammy was already in the yard prior to his handling assessment. He was given some time to decompress, but he only sat down near the gate. When the handler called out to him, he slowly came to her. He had a low tail, lowered head, cowering body posture, soft eyes, a closed mouth and ears pulled back. He placed his head in her lap and gave whale eyes. The handler slowly pet his head and he remained near her. The handler was able to slow and cautiously examine his ears, teeth, stomach, back-end, tail and front/back nails. He remained near the handler and showed no concerning behavior. He was a bit wary of fast movement but tolerated the handler. At the conclusion of the assessment, he sat nearby the handler. Sammy will need some confidence building and continued socialization. He will be available for rescue only with a waiver due to bite history.
