One week ago, a non-profit organization received a heartbreaking request for help from a family who lost everything during the covid shutdowns. The couple ran an event business, which was shuttered long enough to make them lose their savings and their home. The couple explained to People For Animal Care & Kindness:

“I’m homeless, we lost everything in covid shut down since we owned an event business.
We lost our home, our savings, everything.
Now me, my husband, our 4 cats and our dog live in our very small car.”

Making matters worse, the couple’s senior dog, Tiki, had a fast-growing mass on her chest. They explain:

About a month ago our dingo/pit mix started flinching when we touched her chest. Less than a week after we first noticed her discomfort, she got a bump. Now that bump is 2× bigger than her head.

Tiki’s owners had no money to spare…and were heartbroken to not have any funds to help their beloved dog, who had been with them since she was just a pup. They write:

Tiki is our world. Shes almost 11 now, we have had her before she was even born and her dad lived a long life with us before passing away 5 years ago from cancer…
We are in a hotel until Tuesday.

Two days after the initial post to social media, the rescue group shared a sad update about Tiki’s condition, writing:

We are so sad to report that Tiki’s tumor is inoperable and very aggressive. She is the very sweetest girl that has so much life still, but the fluid filled mass on her chest will continue to grow rapidly until her discomfort becomes too great to bear. We are so heartbroken for this family who has lost so much already. 😖 Tiki went home with pain meds and an anti-nausea medication to hopefully help her feel like eating a little more. Our hope now is provide a soft place for Tiki to live until her parents have to let her go.

People who learned of the situation have been stepping up to help. Tiki’s veterinary care has been covered and additional nights at a hotel have been secured so the family can sleep in beds, rather than their car. The group shared a joyful update:

We did it! We found an affordable, pet-friendly hotel and booked it! Tiki and her parents will check in today! 💖🙌🐾 We have raised enough for them to stay 18 days so far! THANK YOU from Tiki and her mom and her dad, they are so relieved and so grateful for the beautiful kindness and compassion being sent their way!
