Earlier this month, an emaciated dog was abandoned in a cardboard box that was left alongside East Holl Road in Cortlandville, New York. The frail, gray pit bull, dubbed Bambi, had only a blue blanket to keep her warm.

Bambi was rushed to a veterinarian for an exam, which revealed no underlying problems…it appears that she was suffering from being deprived of food.

In short order, Bambi was transferred to a foster home where she is thriving. The Cortland County SPCA updated Facebook followers, writing:

Our abandoned pittie girl is thriving in a foster home! As with all stray dogs we get into the shelter, she will need to be on a 5-day stray hold period before she officially becomes ours. After her stray hold period, she will begin to be processed for adoptions. This includes getting her vaccinated, dewormed, microchipped, spayed, etc PLUS getting her to an acceptable weight so she can be adopted out with a clean bill of health.

On March 18, the shelter provided more good news about Bambi’s progress, writing:

I’m a happy girl with a lot of energy. Sometimes I get a little too excited… the staff say I have something called “Happy Tail”. Remember that wound I had on the end of my tail? I keep whacking it on things whenever I see my friends – I can’t help it, I’m just too ecstatic!

With Bambi safe and recuperating, attention is now directed toward finding whoever is responsible for her pitiful condition and cruel abandonment. The New York State Humane Association (NYSHA) and Cuse Pit Crew have each committed to offering a $1,000 reward to anyone who can provide information that leads to the arrest, conviction, and prosecution for the person or persons responsible for Bambi’s condition.

Shelter’s request for information in this case:

We are looking for the person or persons responsible for her abandonment. If you have any information about her or her owners, please contact the law enforcement department of the SPCA by calling 607-753-9386 and pressing 2.
