Raising hopes for all dogs who need someone to lean on

Just two weeks ago, we began to tell the story of Bear – a dog who for eight years had been neglected, abused, starved and who walked around like a lost soul daily with a three-and-a-half-pound tumor attached to the side of his face. From the kind person who used to leave food on their porch for Bear, to the rescuers who trapped the dog to bring him to the protection and care of ThisIsHouston, and to the medical staff who have made miracles for a dog just hours away from death, we remain confident that angels walk among us helping those who cannot speak for themselves.

“Lean on me

When you’re not strong

And I’ll be your friend

I’ll help you carry on…

For it won’t be long

Till I’m gonna need somebody to lean on.”

Bill Withers 1972

On Saturday, some beautiful moments of three dogs, all rescued from the brink of death by ThisIsHouston, have been captured in photos, to remind us how kindness, perseverance and love help.

There are no dogs braver and stronger than Opie and Jake. When rescued, both dogs were dying. Opie had been found with heat stroke on hot pavement in a gas station parking lot. Bystanders were watching, yet no one did anything to help. In addition, he had an obstruction from having eaten trash and rocks just to survive.

As for Jake, he was just one of the many rescued from Cleveland, Texas – a popular dumping ground for the unwanted and abused dogs and cats. He was found collapsed in someone’s yard and had been eaten by bugs, eyes sunken in, was cold to the touch and barely alive. Once he was transferred to the veterinary emergency hospital, he coded twice; miraculously veterinarians were able to bring him back just seconds from death.

And of course we have Bear now. Street feeders in Cleveland spotted him with a huge mass on his face eating cat food that had been left out on someone’s porch. The mass turned out to be a necrotic abscess, likely the result of a recent bullet wound. He had been shot in the neck, and the bullet traveled through his neck and became lodged on the left side of his face. An infection from the wound caused the mass or at least part of the swelling and the infection.

Opie and Jake have been two lucky dogs, who under the care of expert veterinarians and ThisIsHouston volunteers, foster parents and supporters, beat the odds and are now living wonderful lives. And while Bear has terminal Lymphoma, and his time with us is limited, it’s never from lack of trying, loving or helping. Everything possible is being done to prolong Bear’s life.

He’s been doing extremely well – he has a great appetite, he’s quickly learning to walk on a leash, he seeks affection and loves belly rubs, and he’s wagging his tail more and more every day.
