Pennsylvania is home to the largest number of Amish and Mennonite puppy mills in the United States, and more than likely the next time you walk into a pet store or view those adorable online puppies listed for sale, they are likely the products of puppy farms; commercial dog breeding facilities characterized by poor living conditions and quick breeding practices.

Foster mom, Rachael for Adopt A Boxer Rescue introduced Velvet on social media two days ago. The two-year-old dog’s 22-second video tells the story of puppy mills:

Velvet is terrified of everything and had been rescued out of a terrible situation where she had never received a gentle touch or few kind words. Her purpose in life was to produce litter after litter; her puppies to be sold for profit. She lived in a barn; there were never any treats nor was there much social interaction. Velvet was the living equivalent of a puppy making machine.

I debated to show this video but thought this would be a good opportunity to share the truth about Amish puppy mills.

Velvet is scared of everything. When she first arrived, she refused to even exit her crate. All noises and smells terrify her and whenever touched she urinates on herself.

I will never give up. She has a long road to recovery. I want you to think of this video if you are ever able to buy a puppy again. Think of Velvet if you are ever to buy a puppy again. The reason she got out of the mill at 2 years of age is that all 3 of her litters died.

All is not lost however with Velvet. Her foster mom has been wonderful, and just three days later, Velvet felt brave enough to leave her crate. Although she won’t allow anyone get close to her yet, this is progress. And as a sweet aside – Rachael is sure Velvet’s adorable nub wagged a bit.
