In Pittsburgh, three dogs were rescued on Thursday from a vacant home along Charles Street in the Knoxville neighborhood after having been abandoned for nearly three weeks. One of the dogs had been spotted standing on top of the roof barking furiously as if screaming for help.
According to WtaeNews, neighbors had been hearing the barks and howls from the dogs trapped inside. The neighbor from across the street took videos and photos showing one of the dogs on top of the roof of the three story house crying for help. Two other dogs were spotted looking out the window. The story spread quickly.
Pittsburgh police Officer Christine Luffey arrived at the home and left a notice on the front door, and when no one responded reached out to her supervisor that they were going to enter the home and remove the dogs for their own safety. Once in the home, the conditions were quickly deemed uninhabitable; there had been no food or water left for the dogs.
Amid piles of feces, there was clutter and garbage strewn all over the home. On the second floor there were animal food cans with teeth marks on them showing how the dogs had been desperate to find something to eat.
The dogs have since been taken to the Humane Animal Rescue where they are now receiving food, water and medical care as needed.
Thankfully, this was a labor of love by the neighbors and their own community who would not leave these dogs in the vacant home to suffer. Police are now looking for the owner of the dogs and request the dogs be surrendered so they will be able to be adopted. Charges for animal neglect and abandonment are expected to be filed once the owners are located.
