In Adelaide, Australia, a dog owner never expected a walk on the beach to end up in the death of his healthy nine-year-old border collie. Kym Daly, the dog’s owner stated his dog had eaten part of a dead puffer fish that washed up with seaweed along Seacliff; the dog named Scout died an hour later.

According to 9News, Daly had no idea that Scout had consumed any of the fish which toxins are extremely poisonous. It wasn’t until Daly and Scout returned home that symptoms started to appear. Scout vomited, and Daly hoped that had been the end of whatever the dog had eaten. Tragically, Scout did not survive.

Veterinarian Dr. Sophie Sweet said a pufferfish’s poison “causes death by respiratory paralysis so they just can’t breathe anymore”. It is recommended if a dog comes in contact with a puffer fish, they are immediately transported to a vet. The earliest symptoms may include vomiting, trembling and paralysis of their legs.

Puffer fish are also poisonous to humans. If you find one, avoid touching it. If you have something to protect your hands, pick it up by its tail and throw it away in the trash. Maybe a dog’s life can be saved?

Rest in peace Scout.
