In Hancock County, Tennessee, a dog named “Killer” fell into a 30-foot sinkhole on Saturday afternoon. Fortunately the Hawkins County Rescue Squad‘s Multi-Jurisdictional Rope Rescue Team came to the pooch’s rescue.

Team members arrived, and with the help of the Goshen Valley Volunteer Fire Department, a team member was lowered into the approximate 30-foot vertical sinkhole and made contact with “Killer” who was very excited to see him. Team members successfully brought the rescuer and Killer out of the sinkhole to safe ground. Killer was reunited with his owners unharmed.

The rescue efforts took approximately three hours to complete.

The rope rescue team combine training and resources and is governed by HCRS.

Hawkins County and surrounding areas have both natural formations and manmade structures that would require Rope Rescue access to persons trapped in or on them. Prior to the creation of the team, when a rescue demanding low or high angle rope techniques somewhere in the county or neighboring county there are likely to be too few emergency personnel available to conduct the operation safely. Depending upon mutual aid from adjoining counties will mean extra time lost in the rescue of what may be critically injured patient(s).
