A heartbroken dog owner recently utilized social media to warn others about the danger of a certain flea and tick medication that she claims caused her dog’s death. Lauren Wilson posted a photo of the medication prescribed by her veterinarian and explained what happened after she gave her dogs Simparica®:

Wilson explained that Blayz was too lethargic to greet people that came to his house and that after going out one time at night to “take care of business,” he went to sleep and by 4:30 a.m. he was having another seizure. Blayz was taken to the veterinarian for care and Wilson said that she encountered another dog owner going through a similar situation with her own pet:

Though Blayz appeared to initially get beyond the seizures, his owner posted an update that they returned and that he had died:

In July 2019, Zoetis, the maker of Simparica, issued a press release about pets having “neurological issues” from the medication. The company maintains that the medication is safe, but acknowledges that neurological issues are associated with the product:

Simparica is one of four tick and flea medications for dogs in the isoxazoline class currently on the market. The labeling for Simparica is approved by the FDA. The product label and all related promotional materials have always included information about neurologic signs such as tremors, unsteadiness, and/or seizures that have been associated with use of medicines in the isoxazoline class in some dogs.

  1. This is a horrible medicine! My vet tried to give this to my dogs and I said no thank you! Stick with what you know is okay for your dogs. And don’t use Seresto flea collars either a search will bring up nearly 2,000 dead dogs from it. While not as effective the monthly flea meds aren’t as strong. As for ticks & mosquitos I also bought one of those clip on Pet Parade Dog Tick & Flea Repeller from Chewy and it works really good, just clip on their collar.
