Two orphaned bear cubs from Haileybury, Ontario, were rescued last week and are now recuperating at Bear With Us Center for Bears Rehabilitation, Education, Sanctuary The two have been named Alex and Danny – aka AC/DC indicative of where they were found.

According to BayTodayNews, on May 1 the cubs had been spotted on a high electrical pole. Retired Conservation Officer Pet Gilboe, OPP officers and an electrical company bucket truck successfully rescued the three to four month old cubs. Officer Gilboe took the cubs back to his home for the evening hoping that the mother bear would be seen in the area searching for her cubs.

An employee from the Bear With Center for Bears arrived at the officer’s home and brought the cubs back to the sanctuary. Because they are so young, there was little danger involved rescuing them because they barely have any teeth and they didn’t try to bite anyone during their rescue.

The cubs are drinking their specially made formula and will stay on that diet for the next three months. It is expected if the cubs do well, they will be returned to the wilds next summer in the District of North Bay – not far from where they were found.

Sadly, there is a lack of natural food as their habitats are constantly being limited by urban growth. Often the mother bears have been hunted and killed and the babies are left as orphans.
