On June 27, officials in Thailand arrested two Indian women who were traveling with 109 living animals stowed in their luggage. According to a press release from Thailand’s Department of National Parks, x-ray machines detected something suspicious in the women’s luggage, leading to further investigation.

The wildlife smugglers are identified as Nithya Raja, 38, and Zakia Sulthana Ebrahim, 24; they are charged with violating Thailand’s Wildlife Conservation and Protection Act of 2019, the Animal Disease Act of 2015, and the Customs Act of 2017.

The news release states that:

officials of the Customs Office inspecting passengers at Suvarnabhumi Airport jointly arrest Two Indian women with items, a white hedgehog, a turtle, a lizard and a snake hide in two suitcases to travel on a Thai Airways flight to CHENNAI airport, India.

In total, they found wild animals, including two white porcupines, two armadillos, 35 turtles, 50 chameleons, and 20 snakes.

The United States Department of Justice states that:

“Wildlife trafficking threatens security, hinders economic development, and undermines the rule of law. The illicit trade in wildlife is decimating many species worldwide and threatens iconic species such as rhinoceroses, elephants, and tigers with extinction.”
