At the Pasadena Animal Shelter in Texas, a sweet dog the staff dubbed Gertie, had been one of the longest residents there, and no one could figure out why such a sweet, kind and pretty pooch had not been adopted.
Since June, Gertie had been watching out for someone special to come along in her life, and every adoption event presented another chance for Gertie to find her person to love.
And so on December 10, when the shelter hosted their latest adoption event at the Texas Roadhouse, the staff hoped there would be some great adoptions. And as miracles don’t necessarily come with explanations, this particular reunion was as sweet as any pre-planned life event could ever be.
The sweet dog we called Gertie had been with us since June, making her one of our longest-stay dogs.
None of us could understand why she was with us for so long. She was an absolute sweetheart who loved everyone and always had that huge, ear-to-ear smile on her face when she saw you.
But some things are meant to be.

For sure, Gertie had been at the adoption event; she was always keeping her paws crossed for a happy home. And there she was being her charming canine self – when a man approached the staff and said he recognized Gertie. Right after that, the man who was a pastor, called a family in his church who had been missing their beloved dog named Cookie for a year.
They rushed over…and it was her!
There were lots of smiles, tears, hugs and tail wags all around. And now Cookie (formerly Gertie) is back home with her family.
