On Tuesday morning, nearly 60 dogs were seized from property in Hollywood, South Carolina, after the owner was hospitalized and could no longer care for them. In a news release, the Charleston Animal Society explained that the dogs were being held at a rescue operation:

The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office responded to a citizen complaint in Hollywood, SC, where dozens of dogs were being kept outside and inside a residence that was set up as a dog rescue operation. According to the Sheriff’s Department, the homeowner had been hospitalized and was unable to care for the dogs.

After securing a warrant, the sheriff’s office was able to seize 57 dogs, of various breeds and sizes, from the property. All but nine of the dogs were placed in the care of the Charleston Animal Society. Pearl Sutton, Charleston Animal Society’s Chief Lifesaving Officer, commented on the influx of dogs at the shelter:

“Like most other open-admission shelters across the state, we are already overcapacity with adult dogs, but our dedicated staff are working tonight to build additional kennels for these dogs.”

The condition of the dogs is being determined; at this time, there are no criminal charges. The animal welfare agency stated:

“In this case, a concerned citizen picked up the phone and did the right thing,” Sutton said. “If you see an animal you’re concerned about, call the police. In Charleston County, that number is (843) 743-7200.”

  1. Laura Brogan, the woman who ran the dog rescue (MAD Rescue Transport) is an unbelievably caring advocate for animals. I personally adopted two dogs from her over the years. She takes in rescues from all over the southeast, drives to pick them up, and makes sure they are vaccinated and healthy before adopting them out. She creates webpages for each of the dogs on her website, and has a strict screening process. Until they are adopted she pays all the costs of feeding and caring for them. This is truly an angel walking on earth, not a hoarder, or someone who breeds dogs for profit.

If she is guilty of anything it is being too giving, as caring for upwards of 57 dogs was clearly too much for her. Her health issues simply made this result inevitable. Lets all pray for her recovery, so she can get back to saving and rescuing animals. We need more people like Laura, who selflessly serves and saves abandoned and abused dogs.
