Volunteers have rescued more than 100 dogs from an abandoned animal shelter in Ukraine. But the incredible rescue effort was clouded by the ones who did not survive being left alone. On Sunday, the Have A Heart Equine Sanctuary broke the heartbreaking news to Facebook followers, writing about the ones who did not make it out alive:

Apparently, the Director just left the dogs and fled. The Dogs were left without water and food for 30 days. We had to help remove the dead dogs from cages and take them away. Some were eaten by other dogs to survive and some died the worst death ever.

Volunteers worked through their sadness to save the ones who were still breathing. Thanks to Network for Animals, provisions were on hand for the survivors. The animal welfare agency said:

We were able to give the volunteers petrol money,, dog food and water. We also donated blankets and helped transport 2 dogs out of there.

We took as many dogs as we could in our vehicles and the volunteers took them to clinics.
Network for Animals is sending over more dog food and we will make sure they get food.
