Man left dog outside in extreme heat, causing dog to die

On a day when the temperature index climbed to an unbearable 114-degrees, a Mandeville, Louisiana, man left his dog tethered outside without any protection from the intense heat. According to multiple sources, 27-year-old Christopher Jackson for felony animal cruelty after his dog died.

On Saturday, police responded to a home on the 1500 block of Jasmine Street after receiving a call from a concerned neighbor who could see the dog suffering outside. When the police arrived, the dog was already dead.

Sheriff Randy Smith implored area residents to protect their pets from the heat, stating:

“It is extremely hot outside. I plead to all pet owners to please make sure your pets have adequate water, food and some place to go to stay cool.

Our pets cannot tell us when they are hot or when they are thirsty. They rely on us to care for them, and in this case this man failed to provide the bare minimum and his dog died as a result.”

On Saturday, St. Tammany Parish Department of Animal Services said:

We are begging you on behalf of the pets of St. Tammany, and even the entire state of Louisiana.. please bring your animals inside during this heat. Animals with heartworms or other medical issues that may not be immediately physically apparent could struggle in this heatwave and may die of heatstroke. Even healthy animals could die of heatstroke in this weather!
