On Saturday, a California man died while trying to save his two dogs from the base of a waterfall in the Shackleford Falls area. According to a news release from the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO), a 911 call came from the man’s wife on Saturday afternoon. The woman said that her husband, 47-year-old Robert Lewis of Montague, CA had gone to the base of the waterfall to rescue two of the family’s dogs and he was swept away in the swift current, slipping beneath the water and never resurfacing.

Multiple agencies, including the SCSO Search and Rescue, SCSO Dive Team, and CAL FIRE Siskiyou Unit Water Rescue, were deployed to the area to conduct a search, but heavy rains and increased water flow made it unsafe for the divers. On Sunday, Lewis’s body was eventually recovered from the area on Sunday afternoon. A German shepherd that Lewis was trying to save was found deceased in the water on Saturday; as of Tuesday, the other dog had not been located, reports NBC News.
