A Georgia man, said to be jealous of his wife’s love for her dog, has been arrested and jailed for stomping the dog to death in January. According to multiple sources, 26-year-old Charles Van Pelt is facing a felony charge of aggravated animal cruelty for killing his wife’s nine-year-old Dachshund, Penny.
As reported by WVTM News, the horrific incident happened on January 5, and it was captured on surveillance video. The footage shows Van Pelt walking into the dog’s outdoor kennel, closing the door, before repeatedly stomping on the little dog and then hitting her with a heavy object. The attack left Penny bloodied and seizing. Neighbors who witnessed the brutal attack had phoned Van Pelt’s wife, Loren, asking her to get home quickly.
Loren was driven home by Jennifer Reese, a coworker, who told the Ledger-Enquirer that Van Pelt showed no remorse for what he had done.
The dog was rushed to a veterinarian, but she had to be euthanized 30 hours later because her injuries were so severe. The veterinarian treating the dog said that she was suffering from injuries consistent with blunt-force trauma, including brain damage and serious head trauma, which caused her to have seizures.
According to the Ledger, Loren’s parents said that Charles was jealous of his wife’s affection for her rescue dog and that he had complained that she “loves them animals more than she loves him.”
After the horrifying attack, Loren Van Pelt moved out of her home; her husband was arrested last weekend for killing the dog. He was jailed and refused bond.
