A distraught woman in Florida bravely pulled her dog from the jaws of an alligator last Wednesday. The terrifying incident happened outside of Stephany Pineda’s Plantation home. Pineda told NBC Miami that her two-year-old Frenchie was in the mouth of the gator, who got ahold of the dog beneath fencing.

Pineda recounted her reaction:

“I started screaming like crazy, ‘It’s killing her!’ I can’t remember, like everything went silent in my head and I grabbed her but I screamed so loud and my mom was screaming so loud that he let go.”

The dog’s owners believe that recent heavy rains washed away enough dirt under the fencing to allow the alligator access to their yard. Trappers were able to capture the seven-foot alligator and transfer it to a sanctuary. They are hoping to capture another alligator in the area as well.

Amazingly the little do only sustained a few bites from the gator and she is expected to recover.
