In Middleboro, Massachusetts, police helped to move an injured bear from the median of Interstate 495 on Thursday afternoon after the animal had been struck by a car. A medical evaluation by wildlife experts decided the injuries to the bear were too severe, and he could not be relocated.

According to Boston.comNews, the Massachusetts State Police and Environmental Police monitored the bear’s movements for more than an hour and observed the bear hobbling around with an injury to its hind leg. The bear was able to limp back into the woods as authorities closed in.

Troopers tried their best to get the bear to come out of the woods. Traffic had been shut down to avoid injuries. By early Thursday afternoon, officers from the environmental department were able to sedate and put him in the back of a pickup truck. He was later euthanized.
