A former racehorse, recovering from a broken hip at a farm in Selma, Alabama, was stolen and tortured before being abandoned and left to die in a creek. His name was Yankey, and once upon a time, he was a winning racehorse from impressive lineage.
Vicky Stoudenmire was tending to Yankey as he recovered from a devastating hip injury, but during his recovery, he was stolen. What happened next is horrifying.
As reported by WSFA News, a teenager stole Yankey and proceeded to not only ride him but also, ran him hard. Stoudenmire learned how her horse was being treated after viewing a video that was posted to social media. In the video, a teen can be seen taking Yankey for a “joy ride,” and at one point, racing a car to see how fast the horse could run. Yankey was not supposed to have anyone on his back during recovery…much less someone on his back making him run. After a few days of running, the injured horse was too lame to stand.
Dallas County Sheriff Mike Granthum said that the teen solicited help from 23-year-old Terrius Smith and the grievously injured horse was loaded onto a trailer and dumped into a creek where he drowned. His owner is devastated for the suffering he endured before being left to die, telling the news agency:
“I get sick to my stomach thinking about how much pain he was in and how he was just treated so poorly.”
The teenager is facing a second-degree theft of property and aggravated animal cruelty charge and his case will be handled in juvenile court. Smith is also charged with aggravated animal cruelty.
