Officials in Hong Kong plan to track down everyone who purchased a small animal from a pet store following the discovery that an employee tested positive for Covid-19, as well as several hamsters in the store. As reported by the Associated Press, an estimated 2,000 small animals, including hamsters and chinchillas, will be euthanized as a precautionary measure.

According to the news agency, everyone who purchased a pet from the store after January 7 will be tracked down and forced to surrender their pet to be killed. The pet owners will also have to be placed in mandatory quarantine.

Though the risk of getting sick from a pet is small, officials in Hong Kong are unwilling to take any chances and plan to “humanely” euthanize any of the animals that might possibly have been exposed to the covid-19 virus.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) does not identify pets as a risk to people, stating:

The risk of pets spreading COVID-19 to people is low.

Do not put masks on pets; masks could harm your pet.
Do not wipe or bathe your pet with chemical disinfectants, alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, or other products, such as hand sanitizer, counter-cleaning wipes, or other industrial or surface cleaners. There is no evidence that the virus can spread to people from the skin, fur, or hair of pets. Talk to your veterinarian if you have questions about appropriate products for bathing or cleaning your pet.
