In Surprise, Arizona, amid a campground full of tossed away furniture, blankets, cages and trash, almost 150 dogs and cats had been living in cages and handmade kennels. The hoarding situation was discovered just last week when the owners of the animals, who had been living in the extreme heat of the desert, were ordered to leave.
According to the Sky Sanctuary Rescue, the animal welfare organization had received a call about an emergency situation in the Northwest Valley describing a homeless family needing help with the 150 dogs they had been keeping. When officers from the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office arrived, the dogs were found in good physical condition.
Sky Sanctuary Rescue was able to take 55 of the dogs including puppies; all be given the medical care needed and then be made available for adoption.

It’s not often that members of the transient community reach out begging for help but when this family ended up homeless, in the brutal heat of the desert with the 150 animals they were so desperately trying to keep alive in the Arizona monsoons, we knew we had to help. We worked along side the officers of the mash unit to pull the most medically fragile… and then some.

The dogs had been well-fed, socialized and seemed quite content. Often in hoarding situations, the animals are sick, undernourished and not socialized. These people had done an amazing job with the dogs considering their situation.
Maricopa County’s MASH took in 93 dogs and 9 cats; these pets will also be available for adoption as soon as they are medically cleared.
According to the sheriff’s office, the family who owned the dogs will not face any criminal charges and has been reported to have found a place to live.

Most people are “challenged” with a couple of furbabies…….. to have 150 dogs and cats all in good health and well socialized is absolutely incredible!!!
The family should consider having a dog training and dog boarding center in the future. I would love to help them get it set up…….
