A 40-year-old man who was enjoying the great outdoors lost his life after an encounter with a grizzly bear in Montana. Craig Clouatre was hiking in the Six Mile Creek area when he disappeared last Wednesday. An extensive search was instigated and evidence was found on March 25 which indicated that Clouatre had been killed by a bear.

Sheriff Brad Bichler stated:

It is with a very heavy heart that I am writing this update. After an extensive search this morning we have located Craig. It appears he had an encounter with a grizzly and unfortunately did not survive. We will continue to work through the afternoon to bring Craig home. Please keep his family and all those involved in your thoughts and prayers.

Clouatre’s family knew that Craig loved to spend his time outdoors. On Sunday, Sheriff Bichler wrote:

I visited with Craig’s wife this morning and she has reitered to me that she and the family understand that Craig loved to be in wild places and was well aware of the risks involved with that.

As reported by NBC News, Clouatre was hiking with a friend but the pair separated. Clouatre’s friend called the police after returning to the car and discovering that Craig was not there.
