A black Border collie helped rescue his owner along with the Nevada County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue, after the man fell 70 feet off a ridge near Tahoe National Forest in California.

According to the Nevada County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue, the 53-year-old man had been hiking with his Border collie, Saul on July 13, 2022, when the man took a misstep and fell from a ridge, breaking his hip and multiple ribs. The man didn’t have a phone with him, but Saul never missed a loyal beat.

The man was able to crawl up a rocky area to the camp where he had been staying and was able to retrieve his phone and call 911 to ask for help. Several hours later, volunteers with the Search and Rescue organization found the dog in the forest. Saul jumped up and down and ran around in circles as if pleading with the rescuers to follow him. Saul ran about 20 feet in front of the volunteers, and they followed.

Although some of the rescuers didn’t have a lot of faith in the dog’s actions, but the volunteers – absolute experts in what they do – followed Saul for about 200 yards, and there they found the dog’s owner covered with a camouflage tarp. The man was in pain, but grateful that the rescuers showed up and just as grateful that Saul helped to lead the men to his location.

25 SAR Members responded and located the subject but the true credit goes to the subjects k9 Border Collie that ran through the forest approximately 200 yards and in true ”LASSIE” fashion to flag down two searchers and led them back to the subject which was covered in a camo tarp.

The hiker was flown by helicopter to a hospital for treatment and is expected to make a full recovery. Saul was rewarded with an extra beef jerky stick and received lots of pets and praises. He spent the night at a local rescue.

Many thanks to the Nevada County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue team – you guys rock.
