In Des Moines, Iowa the Animal Rescue League arrived at an apartment in the southeast side of town on Monday to find a Great Dane shut in a crate with no food or water. The animal rescue organization had been acting on a tip about a dog in desperate need.

When officers arrived, the dog named Kal, appeared to be little more than a skeleton. The people living at the apartment were told to let the dog out of the wire crate, and the moment he was free, Kal ran into the bathroom and started guzzling water out of the toilet.

Kal was transported to the organization’s Emergency Care Team, who were alerted and waiting for the dog’s arrival.

The sight was shocking. We could see every bone in his body. He was so emaciated and dehydrated that even his head and eyes were sunken in. He had no muscle mass whatsoever and weighed just 44 pounds. He wouldn’t have survived much longer.

The dog was immediately given food and water and drank and ate ravenously. He has been started on intravenous fluids because of his severe dehydration. He is on a careful refeeding program to help him safely gain weight.

One has to question how anyone could stand by and watch their dog waste away while they enjoyed eating and drinking. An investigation has been launched.
