In the City of Dyer, Tennessee, police were dispatched to a heartbreaking situation where more than 75 dogs had been abandoned in a rotting house after the owners moved away. The property owners only returned to the dilapidated and filthy home to leave food for the dogs.

The house, having been determined to be structurally unsound, had been the home for the dogs for an unknown amount of time. The rescue mission dubbed Operation Holiday Heartbreak was accompanied by the fire department and other first responders who had to initially brace the rotting floors so rescuers could enter the structure.

The dogs are small and medium-sized and range from a puppy of only three weeks to pregnant mothers to elderly dogs with dementia – they all have been severely neglected for some time and have numerous untreated injuries and conditions. This is a cruelty case, the animals have been seized and ARC is documenting cruelties and creating evidence packets, with all animals headed to ARC’s Rescue Center outside Nashville for urgent care. bit.ly/holidayheartbreakARC

ARC

Animal Rescue Corps were called to help, and when they arrived rescuers met dogs ranging from only a few weeks of age to elderly dogs showing significant signs of long term neglect and overcrowding. Some of the dogs had open bite wounds from fighting with each other; others had parasites and other untreated conditions.

Rescuers were overcome by the smell of ammonia from the street even as they approached the house. Thermal imaging was used to locate the animals.

This is a cruelty case and ARC is currently working with authorities collecting evidence and performing forensic exams. All of the dogs have since been seized and are receiving urgent care.
