An elderly German shepherd, 14 years of age, lost his family and home on April 5 when his owner surrendered him to the Baldwin Park Animal Care Center in California. The dog, named Smokey, continues to wait at the shelter…because nobody has chosen to take him home.

On April 11, the Saving Baldwin Park Shelter Dogs Facebook page wrote:

💔SMOKEY💔 #A4749563 💔 14 YR OLD owner surrender on 4-5. No words needed. Please just tag rescues and pledge if you can to get him rescued. If you’re looking to adopt a senior, please come meet Smokey and save a life. He just wants a comfy place to lay his head.

It is hard to imagine handing the leash of your elderly companion to a stranger and turning to walk away – nobody knows what was behind the decision, and at this point, it is no longer important. What IS important is Smokey’s future. Very few people walk into an animal shelter in search of a dog who has already lived the vast majority of his life.

But Smokey deserves to enjoy the rest of his natural life with someone who will love and spoil him for the time that he has left. Please share Smokey’s adoption information and help him find a loving home, before it is too late.
