A young German shepherd named Duke was left at a busy California animal shelter in April. Losing his home and family left Duke confused and scared – and to make matters worse, Duke has not been rescued or adopted after all this time. Duke’s former owner told shelter staff at the Carson Animal Services facility that their dog was good with other dogs and that he had lived his life as an outside pet.

Shelter behavior notes from 4/25/2022 read:

Duke A5474114 (INTACT) was at the back of the kennel with dilated pupils, a slightly tense body with a lowered posture, and a closed mouth. He was easy to leash, but required coaxing to exit the kennel. He walked nicely on leash and was easy to collar. In the catch pen, his body was slightly tense and he was way of the other dogs. He stayed close to the runner’s side and solicited petting from the runner. He slowly entered the yard and nervously greeted the other dogs. He stayed close to the handlers and solicited petting.

German shepherds are intelligent, faithful companions, and because they are sensitive, they are known to do poorly in shelter settings. Please help Duke find a loving family by sharing his adoption information. He has been homeless long enough…
