Famous for his independent spirit, a black Labrador retriever and mastiff mix, who gained international fame for her ability to ride a city bus alone to play at the park, died in her sleep on Friday night.
According to Eclipse’s Facebook page, the 10-year-old dog had just been diagnosed with cancerous tumors.
In 2015, Eclipse began to ride the bus by herself. The dog and her owner, Jeff Young would regularly take the bus to Belltown Dog Park. One day Jeff had been sitting at the bus stop in front of their home when the bus arrived, and Eclipse decided not to wait for Jeff to finish smoking his cigarette and boarded the bus alone.
Within a few weeks, Eclipse became a regular commuter. Dressed in her red harness, the bus driver recognized her and said the dog knew her stop by looking out the window.
King County Metro, the bus service Eclipse used, created a video in honor of this sweet and intelligent pooch in 2015.
Eclipse was a super sweet, world-famous bus riding dog and true Seattle icon. You brought joy and happiness to everyone and showed us all that good dogs belong on the bus.
