A dog who faced an unthinkable fate was rescued this month from a creek where he had been tethered to a cinder block. On March 6, West Virginia’s Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association posted photos of the dog, explaining where he was found:

Dog found near Rutledge Road in the creek with back legs tied to a cinder block 💔
We are heartbroken at the circumstances through which this dog was found. But we are very thankful to the kind man who found this baby and rushed him to us!

As reported by WOWKTV News, the dog, named Dasher, had escaped from his leash on Sunday and his family had been searching the area when they saw the post by the animal shelter. Amazingly, Dasher was discovered 17 miles away. His owner, Amber Browning, tells the news agency, “I saw my dog’s picture, and it said that someone had tied him to a cinderblock,” adding, “I immediately got on there and was like ‘This is my dog!’”

Nobody knows who is behind the cruel incident, but everyone is grateful that Dasher is back home. The animal welfare agency updated Facebook followers, writing:

We found his original owner! Sounds like Dasher was stolen from them 😢 he was so, so happy to see his mom 🥺 thank you all for helping us find his mom!
