“This world is not fair. It is cruel. This wasn’t supposed to happen.” Heartbreaking words were written days ago by the owner of a brave Belgian Malinois who tried to fight off a mountain lion who attacked near the Trinity River in California. The dog, named Eva, was seriously injured in the attack but she was expected to recover…tragically, things took a terrible turn for the worse days ago and now Eva is gone.

Eva’s owner, Erin Wilson, let the dog’s Instagram fans know of the unexpected death on Wednesday, writing:

We said goodbye at 9:20 this morning. There were no changes to her condition overnight. Goodbye my beautiful sweet girl. You are my world, my light, my best friend. The world is a much darker place. F*ck you universe.

The prior day, Wilson explained what was happening to her beloved companion:

When i brought Eva to UC Davis, she was able to walk/run, wag her tail, give everyone her usual love and affection with some wobbliness. Unfortunately overnight she had more seizures, and her mentation deteriorated. As of just a few hours ago she is comatose. There is no neurological response to pain or stimuli. We are getting an MRI done to see if there could be a lesion, hematoma, or something else that is causing this. Her prognosis is not good. There is a chance she could pass at anytime. I don’t know what else to say right now.

Eva was attacked by the big cat while she and Wilson were enjoying a walk together in mid-May. The loyal dog took on the mountain lion without hesitation, likely saving her owner’s life. Read the original story at this link.

Rest in peace Eva.
