On Wednesday, a dog rescue in Lake Charles, Louisiana, announced the arrival of a grievously injured pit bull who was “cold, wet, and full of bullet holes.” The dog, dubbed Smokey, was rushed to an emergency veterinarian where the full extent of his injuries became apparent.

The Lake Charles Pit Bull Rescue explained what the exam found when Smokey was taken to the veterinary hospital, writing:

We received horrible news about Smokey. This beautiful boy was shot in the head, the bullet went through his head, into his lung cavity and into his bowels.

According to the rescue agency, the veterinary staff did all that they could for him, but his injuries were too extensive. They explain, “ultimately he would have drown due to internal bleeding into his chest cavity. So we made the most heart-wrenching decision one in rescue could do, to humanely euthanize him.”

Smokey is gone and the looming question remains, who shot him? The rescue group writes:

If you know who this dog belonged to, please contact us-so we may try to get justice for Smokey. He was found in Ville Platt. Rescue is hard, and situations like this cause us pain, frustration, and endless anger-this was not necessary. Smokey didn’t deserve this!
