A cruel, unknown person abandoned a black and white cat with two broken legs and an eye injury at a rest stop off I-95 in Connecticut. The cat was found inside of a pet carrier on January 24 by state police officers in Darien.

According to New Canaan Animal Control, the cat, now named Highway, had been abandoned with these injuries and when rescuers arrived to help him, he just stayed very still and perhaps hopeful that help had arrived. Pets Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) was notified and asked to help.

Earlier this afternoon, the non-profit animal rescue organization posted the good news about Highway’s road to recovery:

A big thank you to all who donated to Highway’s care. Great news! Highway has undergone a successful eye removal. He tolerated the surgery well and is now recovering and resting comfortably. According to our surgeon, Dr. Adrien Zap, the cause of the eye injury is likely due to prior abuse causing an eye rupture which resulted in terrible pain. Well, after this successful surgery, Highway has no more pain in his eye. The next step is to consult with surgeons on how to repair his two broken front legs, again caused by suspected abuse. Highway is one of the lucky ones. He is away from his abuser(s) and is now surrounded by love and care from the staff/volunteers at PAWS.

In spite of the torturous treatment Highway once endured, he remains very sweet, friendly and playful.

Highway is a really special guy … with everything he has been through, he still seeks love and attention.

Although Highway still has a long road ahead of him until he is ready to be adopted, he will surely make someone an excellent addition to their family.
