A beloved K9 with Tennessee’s Humphys County Sheriff’s Office died inside of a patrol car that caught fire last week. According to sources, the five-year-old German shepherd, Ciro, was inside of the patrol SUV when an electric fire started…a concerned passerby noticed smoke coming from the vehicle and alerted deputies who were inside of the nearby courthouse.
Tragically, the electrical fire prevented the vehicle from being unlocked and before the windows could be broken out, Ciro died. Ciro’s handler, Deputy Shaun Gary, described the horrifying situation to WKRN News:
“I couldn’t get to him and it’s like one of your children. I burnt myself and was going to burn myself to get to that dog. That was the hardest thing for me was not being able to get in that car.”
The patrol SUV was fitted with safety features meant to alert the driver if there was a problem inside of the vehicle, but the electrical short disabled the system. Ciro lived with his handler full time and those who loved him are dealing with an unbearable loss. Deputy Gary said, “Ciro was perfect in everything he did; his behavior, his home life, his work life, everything was perfect and we won’t be able to replace him.”
A memorial service for Ciro was held on Sunday.
