A three-year-old Belgian Malinois abandoned and left starving in the Mykolaiv region of Ukraine by Russian soldiers was rescued and nursed back to health by Ukrainian troops. Three-year-old Max has now been redeployed and is an expert at detecting landmines; ultimately he has been saving Ukrainian soldiers.

According to the National Guard of Ukraine, Max has been taught Ukrainian commands and has become a favorite with the troops. No one can even understand why the Russian soldiers abandoned the dog and left him to die. The Daily Star, reported Max had been left behind after Russians captured the Mykolaiv region and was dumped when their troops retreated. Max survived by eating rotten food.

When found, Max was still wearing a camouflage collar issued to Russian military dogs.

Ukrainians love their dogs and regard them as members of their families. Max seems to have developed a real love and obvious loyalty to the Ukrainian soldiers.

“From now on, Max will serve on the right side, defending Ukraine and nibbling Russian asses.”
