On June 22, a black bear died after getting stuck inside of a parked car in Sevierville, Tennessee. Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency recounted what happened and shared a sad image of the bear who died:

A black bear died after getting stuck inside a parked car at a Sevierville rental cabin yesterday.
A wildlife officer says that the car’s owner left the cabin in a different vehicle around 10 am and found the bear dead inside upon returning at 6:45 pm. It appears that the bear got inside the car by using its teeth or paws to open the unlocked door and was trapped inside after the door shut behind it.

Wildlife officials believe that the excessive heat in the car’s interior led to the bear’s demise – it was 95 degrees on the day that the bear got trapped in the car, and likely 140 degrees inside of the vehicle. The bear’s tragic death prompted the wildlife agency to educate the public about bears:

Notice the empty soda can and food package on the floorboard. Bears have noses 7 times better than a bloodhound and can smell even the faintest odor of food inside a vehicle. Lock your doors, roll up your windows, and never leave food or anything that smells like food inside! Empty food containers, candy wrappers, fast food bags, and even air fresheners can attract bears. Please be #BearWise and help us keep bears wild and alive.
