On the evening of July 4, the body of a young woman was found in a Valrico, Florida, retention pond. According to sources, the 29-year-old woman, identified as Shayla Silva, had injuries on her body consistent with those of an alligator attack.

Silva’s step-mom, Mary Simpson, tells Fox 13 News, that Silva suffered with depression, and mental health issues. According to Simpson, it was Silva’s depression which drew her to the pond that was near their home. She said:

We really tried to keep our eyes on what she was doing. But yes, when she would get away from us, she would be walking down and go to the pond,”

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that Silva’s injuries appeared to be from an alligator – trappers are currently looking for the one that is responsible for her death.
