A young police K9 unexpectedly passed away at just two years of age. Riggs, a working K9 with the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office in Michigan, died on August 13 “in the arms of his handler.”

As reported by The Oakland Press, it is believed that Riggs, a Dutch shepherd, had a genetic defect which led to a heart attack.

Sheriff Michael Bouchard commented on the tragic loss:

“Our animals are such a great part of our life an impact us in so many positive ways and their passing leaves a huge void. Especially in this circumstance where this was one of our newer dogs that had showed such great promise and connection with people. He will be greatly missed.”

Riggs had only worked with the department for eight months before passing away.

Rest in peace Riggs.

  1. Rest in peace handsome boy, my sincere condolences to your handler, family and fellow officers, I know how much you will be missed. The tragic thing about loving a dog is you never know when you will lose them.
