A York, Pennsylvania man was charged with animal cruelty and reckless endangerment by the Northern York County Regional Police on Thursday after allegedly shooting his dog in the face because the dog didn’t want his nails trimmed.
According to the York Dispatch, Aaron G. Willis, 43, had been “highly intoxicated” at the time of the incident which occurred about 1:00 a.m. when his girlfriend accused the man of shooting the dog in the face. The Cane Corso, named Winston, suffered severe injuries to his snout.
Willis claimed the dog attacked him while he had been arguing with his girlfriend and that he shot the dog in self-defense. The ex-girlfriend who had gone to Willis’ home to retrieve her belongings painted a different picture telling police the dog has not liked his nails trimmed and wasn’t cooperating.
Willis, described as 6’2′ and weighing 230 pounds hit the dog several times and then retrieved his gun. With a pistol in one hand and a baseball bat in the other hand, the girlfriend recorded the disturbing situation with her cellphone, which showed the man pointing the gun at the dog, but the gun jammed. Once he cleared the 45 caliber hand gun, he hit Winston “point blank.”
There has not been any update on Winston’s condition.
Willis remains free on $20,000 unsecured bail, according to court records.
